Performers are amazing, talented individuals who rely on their body for their income. They are usually creative and passionate about what they do. As such, they often put their livelihoods ahead of caring for their body.
Musicians
Musicians are at high risk of developing repetitive strain injuries (RSI), which are caused by the recurrent nature of playing their instrument at practice, rehearsals and performances. This can place enormous strain on their muscles, joints and nerves which are made worse by the stress and pressure as well as posture to play their instrument.
Taking regular breaks is beneficial, as is regular maintenance treatment to look after the physical body to allow one to continue with their pastime.
Of course, not all musicians are professional, but it is important that even the amateur violinist, pianist or flautist takes great care during their practice and performance to optimise their posture and reduce stresses and strains on specific areas of the body.
Dancers
The professional dancer places their body under great strain with punishing rehearsals and schedules. If not taken seriously, these dance-related injuries can effect and shorten one’s career.
Whilst many dancers are very flexible, this can sometimes be disadvantageous as it places greater stresses and strains on the joints, muscles and ligaments. Just as it is important to train and rehearse, it is equally vital to take regular rest breaks. For example, ballet dancers, whilst being strong and flexible, place enormous loads through their feet and ankles, resulting in ongoing injuries. However, one advantage is that generally speaking, the dancer has excellent posture.
Likewise, those who dance as a hobby need to be wary that they do not allow minor injuries to become limiting in their enjoyment and lifestyle.
Acting
Rigorous training, rehearsals and performances can place great strain on the body, as well as the psychological tension of finding work and earning and income.
The amateur dramatist can equally be susceptible to the rigours of acting.
As everyone knows, “the show must go on….” Hence, listen to your body when get those niggles, aches and pains resolved quickly.
